Teeth Need Armor!
Natural teeth are protected by a natural armor called enamel. Enamel is fully formed before the tooth erupts into the oral cavity. After eruption, it adapts to the oral environment and
gradually hardens over several years. However, over a lifetime, enamel does not regenerate and slowly weakens as it undergoes aging.
The primary factor that weakens enamel is tooth decay, which commonly occurs during childhood. As people age, teeth are more likely to experience wear, cracks, or chipping rather than decay. Beneath the enamel lies dentin, and when it becomes exposed, teeth begin to feel sensitive and painful. This is the result of the natural armor being compromised.
To maintain optimal dental health, it is crucial to preserve the natural armor—enamel—for as long as possible. Effective enamel preservation habits include thorough brushing, using fluoride toothpaste, avoiding hard or highly acidic foods, and using protective devices against teeth grinding.
If the enamel becomes damaged and the dentin is also affected, a dental crown may be necessary. A dental crown can be thought of as an artificial replacement for the natural armor. The term “crown” originally means “a royal headpiece” or “a crown” and is used in dentistry because the dental crown covers the “head” or top part of the tooth, much like a royal crown covers a head.
In essence, a dental crown is a custom-made cap that is placed over a damaged tooth to restore and protect it. Crowns are used to restore the tooth’s shape, size, and strength, or to improve its appearance.
Common situations where a crown may be needed include: Restoring extensive cavities or damaged areas / Strengthening teeth weakened by root canal treatment / Preventing fractures in cracked or severely worn teeth / Improving the color, shape, or alignment of teeth.
Dental crowns can be made from various materials such as gold, porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and zirconia. Each material has its pros and cons, so the choice should be discussed with a dentist to determine what works best for the individual.
The treatment process typically involves the following steps: Diagnosis and Consultation / Tooth Preparation and Impression / Temporary Crown Placement / Fabrication of the Permanent Crown / Final Crown Placement.
The entire process usually requires 2–3 visits to the dentist. In some cases, additional treatments, such as root canal therapy, may be needed beforehand.
To extend the lifespan of a crown, regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, proper brushing, and flossing are essential. Avoiding hard foods and protecting teeth from grinding are also critical, just as with natural teeth.
Dental crowns serve as a reliable and durable solution for restoring damaged teeth while maintaining both function and aesthetics. Think of them as a noble replacement for the natural armor your teeth once had!
